Founded nearly 40 years earlier, [Jonathan Cape] had established itself as the most elegant and distinguished of literary publishers, but had run out of energy and ideas by the 1950s. While on his first trip to New York - where he bought the British rights to Joseph Heller's Catch-22 - [Tom Maschler Picador] learned that Alien Lane was planning to buy Cape on the understanding that his former protégé be removed.
