Summary
Looking around the Lakenhal, you can see why [Lievens] was the first of the two artists to achieve fame. His bright, flamboyant paintings are much easier on the eye than Rembrandt's. Yet these same pictures also suggest why it is Rembrandt's work that has endured, while Lievens's is largely forgotten. Even early Rembrandt paintings are full of psychological insight. Next to Lievens's work, they seem incredibly modern.
