According to the Energy Saving Trust, carbon emissions are not actually reduced if air- source heat pumps replace gas or oil boilers, but only existing electric heating and coal-fired systems. According to a 2009 report, Scenarios for Renewable Heat Supply Capacity Growth to 2020, the UK is likely to have between 600,000 and 1.6 million heat pumps by 2020.
