Peter Tatchell is wrong to report that at the European conference at City Hall to oppose the ban on the hijab in French schools (Observations, 19 July), "not a single speaker... defended the right of women not to wear the hijab". The prominent Muslim leader Tariq Ramadan said: "It is against the Islamic teaching to force a woman to wear the hijab, because it is an act of faith... Freedom of worship means if you want to wear it, wear it; if you don't want, don't wear it."
