This ambivalence haunts District and Circle and is, in my opinion, a strength. As if in defiance of old age, terrorism and abstract spirituality, [Seamus Heaney] asserts the force of heavy, earthy things and, in doing so, visits the subjects and scenes of his earlier poems.
