Summary


Before the advent of tailoring (the 14th century), it was simply impossible to expose your middle bit without the rest of your clothes falling off. Yet even after clothes got fitted it just wasn't done to expose such an intimate area of flesh, unless you were a belly dancer. Even René Magritte's depiction of the erotic zones in Philosophy in the Boudoir (1947) shows the breasts and feet, but ignores the midriff.
